Chapter 16 – Exercising when you're Sick

This chapter is going to be short because the answer is straightforward.

Once you become passionate about exercise getting sick is going to piss you off more than usual because you will hate anything that interferes with your ability to workout.

There is a simple and accepted wisdom when it comes to exercising while sick referred to as the “neck check.” If your symptoms are from the neck up (runny nose, congestion, sore throat etc.) then you are okay to keep exercising, although you may wish to decrease the intensity.

If the symptoms go below the neck, however, then you need to take some time off. Things like chest congestion, coughing, fever and chills, body aches and the like make exercising a bad idea. When you get an illness like this it won’t take much convincing to get you to stay home in bed.

On that note, I’m a fan of an annual flu shot. From personal experience I have had far fewer sicknesses since I started getting it about ten years ago.
